I'm a very light snuffer, so a few grams lasts me quite a while. When my supply starts to run a little low I think about what I want to make next and leave the chosen tobacco in a ziplock sandwich bag where it will dry out slowly and be perfect for my mortar and pestle. After grinding and sifting a few times I end up with a dry powder which I then seal in a small jar. I then take a small piece of cloth to which I have added the flavoring (if any) and a small amount of water, wrap it in foil and poke some holes. When the snuff just barely begins to clump a little it's ready for my snuffbox! I'm still experimenting, but I just make small amounts so I'm not wasting more than a few cents worth of tobacco anyway.
If you like Latakia, Dunhill's #965 makes a wonderful snuff. I had originally tried the Black XXX straight today but it was just too damned strong so I cut it with McClelland's Virginia Woods. Next will be McClelland's #2025, I think, with perhaps the tiniest flash of lemon oil.
I just love tobacco, and this appeals to the Mad Scientist that lurks inside of me...
