To my big surprise I read the thread about the Rolando Negoita "hype". I must confess I was unaware of the existence of a hype around the pipes of Rolando! Is there really a hype going on? True: lately Rolando's pipes have been discovered by the collectors and obviously their original and creative design doesn't leave indifferent. Moreover at the last Chicago Show, Rolando won the prestigious "Best Briar Display" prize. Is this due to a hype? IMO Rolando undoubtedly is one of the most innovative pipe designers of this era. So he deserves the attention he is getting.
It seems to me that quite some Europeans call this attention a hype, because of two distinct reasons: first of all Rolando is a real newcomer that, out of the blue, came up with a very personal style that created an immediate interest amongst US collectors. Secondly, Rolando being considered a US carver, while in fact he is Roumanian, most European collectors show quite some reticence. The situation of Kent Rasmussen is perfectly comparable: a new guy on the block immediately amazes with an individual style. He is immediately acclaimed by the European collectors. His pipes must be as good as they look, since he is Danish. The same credit is not given to Rolando!
Let me add I was rather amazed to see how many people express "opinions" about pipes they never saw "in person" and for sure they didn't ever try. What is the value of such opinions? Personally I own two Rolando pipes. IMO these pipes present a stunning design. They have a very personal look, yet they aren't "far out". Moreover both pipes have been made out of high quality briar and their engineering and execution are exemplary, Rolando being a real perfectionnist. Even his most dramatically bent pipes allow a pipe cleaner to pass with ease. The drills, fits and balance are beyond reproach and the silver work is stunning. Both pipes smoke perfectly well and deliver a great taste. One point of criticism: personally I like flatter bits. But hey, if Eltang thinks Rolando makes a great pipe, I think you guys should accept it as a fact, in stead of talking of a hype!

Der 1955 in Rumänien als Kind einer Künstlerfamilie geborene Rolando Negoita fertigt seit ca. 1980 Pfeifen - anfangs in seiner Heimat aus einheimischen Hölzern (Kirsche, Rosenholz), seit 2002 in den USA.
Rolando ist diplomierter Designer und arbeitete schon mit Calvin Klein oder Giorgio Armani, er fertigt sowohl als Metallschmied Messer als auch skulpturelle Pfeifen,
die meist organischen Formen wie Nüssen, Blüten, Fischen etc. angelehnt sind.
Dabei arbeitet er immer nach der Prämisse: form follows function.
Seine Modelle sind in der Tat Skulpturen aus Bruyere, die sich aber einwandfrei
rauchen lassen und mit Sorgfalt gefertigt sind.
Rolando läßt sich nicht auf Serienmodelle oder Trends festlegen,
hat aber gleichwohl seinen eigenen und unverwechselbaren Stil gefunden.

Das filterlose Mundstück besteht aus hochwertigem Ebonit oder Cumberland,
mit sehr fein und dünn gearbeitetem Biss.
Fazit
Sehr hochwertig gefertigte, "etwas andere" Pfeifen,
die erkennbar einen eigenen Stil besitzen.

Hier eine sogenannte "blue whale",
deren mehrere sich kreuzende Linien einfach gelungen und stimmig sind.
Diese Pfeife ist recht klein und leicht, hat jedoch mittleres Füllvolumen
und einen sehr flachen, angenehmen Biss.
